“Nana’s Veranda”: Review and Verdict

With production from WNS Beats, the UK rapper is one of few wordsmiths permeating the hip-hop scene with veritable, authentic narratives. Leaning into his recognisable cadence, the spitter relates moving tales about his family and personal struggles.

Unraveling as a monologue of longing for a life before prison, Malone uses rap as an outlet to convey the silent grief he carries with him. Spinning yarns from nostalgia, he circumnavigates searching questions that perhaps he may never feel comfortable answering.

Speaking on the track, Malone said: “My first memories in life were on Nana’s Veranda, so I’m starting this journey where it originated.”

Its production is a masterclass in minimalism, outshining a maximalist scene through structures of snares and lento piano. The finish of this class-A game is both self-assurance, and the profound experiences that have shaped his life.

Marnz Malone is one of the few UK rappers able to write with a commanding tone. Stylistically, his coda represents a handful of others in need of greater exposure. Shunning artificial productions and jittery conformist music, Nana’s Veranda is proof that there are more needles to be found in the haystack.
