‘Dopamine’: Robyn Returns With A Big Pale Tune

Following a seven-year break, Robyn returns to shake up speakers but displays little growth

Swedish singer-songwriter Robyn returns to the charts following a seven -ear hiatus. Her new song, ‘Dopamine‘, is pop in its purest form. Partnering it with a bare bones music video, she takes to a blank canvas to strut her stuff with a carefree attitude.

Review: Dopamine โ€” a Platitudinous Release

Her chemistry explodes into an event of her own making as she performs alongside long-time collaborator Klas ร…hlund. Vocalising over an electro-pop flutter of synths and keys, the singer weaves a diaspora of thoughts as she projects this new vision, gracefully tracing her careful signature over ‘Dopamineโ€™s production. However, is it good?

The Verdict

While it harks back to Robyn’s classic style, itโ€™s a far cry from sounding original. It does, of course, let listeners recognise her classic motif from the get-go, though will it bear fruit?

The artist explained the purpose behind the new song, with a philosophical
explication of its meaning: โ€œEveryone has a phone where they see their heart rateโ€ she said. โ€œItโ€™s almost like we donโ€™t even accept that weโ€™re human anymore, like weโ€™re trying to shoot ourselves out of it and explain every single thing โ€“ which I think is great, but thatโ€™s also why the world is sh*t, this idea that you can figure out and win life or something.โ€

Despite this, it doesn’t override the outcome, and I doubt I’ll return to it. Although, this is a gift to her fans โ€” and the career break will likely act as the catalyst for streaming.
