Manchester is having its moment and is producing a number of rappers and producers with ammunition to contend with the best. One such spitter is Big Gemini, a lyricist with enough fuel in the tank to set the game on fire. Stanisland Magazine sat down with the UK rap artist to talk about her plans.
How did you glide into music?
“To be honest, I never really wanted to be an artist. I’ve always loved music and always had the talent for making it—from all the freestyle raps my friends and I used to do in high school, to being at home in my room and just making little rap tracks to listen back to on BandLab from the age of 14/15. I always thought being a rapper would ruin my professionalism and media presence, which it really still could, to be honest, if I’m not careful.”

“For example, even though Sexyy Red is very successful, there are a lot of brands that wouldn’t work with her despite her success, just because of the brand she has for herself. So yeah, the moment I realised this was evoked a strange feeling. I feel like in that exact moment I was going down a very dark place—a verrryy dark place. This is when I was kicked out, and that’s exactly what Miss Outlaw is — a brief explanation of what I went through during that period of my life. But someone spoke to me, seriously put their hand on me, and was just like, “Stick to the music.” And it was weird because I wasn’t actually recording then. I had two songs that I had made, but that was it. So it was just really weird, and yeah, from then—now this. Period.“
What’s the origin of your name?
“My mum used to be really big on astrology and still kinda is (I have never been into it, to be honest), but she’s a Scorpio and I’m a Gemini, which supposedly are two very quite opposite star signs that are very fiery when up against each other. So whenever we used to argue, she would say to me, “You’re such a Gemini,” and I kinda just ran with it”.
“Originally, I was the baddest Gemini, but then I grew out of it, and well, I’m a troller. So to troll everyone who didn’t like me at the time, I decided to go with “BIG” even though I was only 5’2, but I did it so then I could say some sly shi like I’m small but still going to be bigger than you—LOOOOL“.
What’s the origin story of your sound?
“Well, if you listen to my first ever release on SoundCloud, 5FOOT2 – BIG GEMINI, compared to my first actual release on Spotify, MISS OUTLAW – BIG GEMINI, my sound developed a lot—from a very soft, femme but monotone way of rapping to a very expressive and aggressive rap style, with the help of my producer MERTA (Mert Akkus) whom I worked very closely with, hand in hand, to develop my sound. My sound is something I am still trying to develop, mixing my original femme style with my new aggressive style to create the BIG GEMINI duality”.
Who is your biggest influence outside of music?
“This sounds really controversial, especially for what I talk about in my music, but I’m really motivated by God and my faith to kinda get to the point in music and in my life where I can preach the word of Him through my music in Secret Agenda and just have a large enough platform to preach good morals. I am also motivated by my family and old friends, but more in the way of proving them all wrong and just sh***ing on them (not all my family—some support me, e.g., my mum now).”
What album can you guarantee will make someone happy?
“I love Ella Mai’s debut album.Great spiritual healing”.
What three films have influenced your style?
“The three films that influenced my style definitely would be Spider-Man: Far From Home—one, because I love Spider-Man, and two, because I like the thrill and ambition between the main characters, Peter Parker and MJ.
My second film would definitely be Get Rich or Die Tryin’. I watch this film a lot; this is one of the two films I genuinely seek comfort in—one, because I genuinely love 50 Cent, and two, because I love how it’s based on his true life story. I wanna make a short lim, maybe 3–5 minutes long, as part of one of my HOODCLASSY ACTS.
Finally, my last would be Girls Trip, another of my favourite movies I seek comfort in, because I am a girls’ girl and just find it hella funny.”
What’s your backstage ritual?
“To be honest, I don’t have one yet. I’m just happy to perform anytime I get the chance to. To be honest, kinda just remember who the fuccc I am with a lil BIG GEM, BIG GEM, BIG GEM, and I’m alright, to be honest.”
What’s your favourite place in the world?
“Toronto, Canada—my homeland. I love it there. Half of my dad’s side of my family are there; it’s my home away from home, my comfort, where I’m tryna go for a lil, and yeah, feel connected with my people”.
Why should hip-hop heads care about your music?
“People should care about my music because it comes from a place of deep-rooted expression. You can dance, shout, cry, or twerk to it on a multi-faceted level — you can really feel and connect with my style. It’s an experience, a journey — one I’d encourage you to follow, so you can say you’ve been there from the start. I appreciate all the support I’ve received”.
