The American rapper plays the hip-hop game on her own terms with new fan debut modesty, Sailor Goon

When Stanisland Magazine spoke to Maliibu Miitch, she promised the release of her first long play, Sailor Goon. Fast forward a couple of months and here we are. The rapper drops her first mixtape with a broad palette of sounds for a host of hip-hop fans. Featuring a hard range of robust verses and equally tantalising production, the North Carolina based lyricist proves herself to be a relentless force of rap.

Maliibu Miitch’s new mixtape, Sailor Goon is worth the wait.

Review: A Renaissance of Sound

“BBM” featuring P.C. sets the tone with some classic hip-hop tonalities that carve a straight synergy between the two rappers. This leads into multiple tracks with a fresh and polished yet raw identity she both revived and reinvented. It’s an easy thing to liken her to Foxy Brown meets Lil’ Kim meets a product of the two; but such comparisons still do not do her justice. Let’s get one thing straight: Miitch is dropping some serious hip-hop and skill on this new album.

Not afraid to ride several beats with a free-flowing personality, Roberts takes to the microphone with the intention to overwhelm. Several tracks, including “Green”, “Extra” and “Rap Rhianna”, successively craft catchy hooks to support lyrically adept bars.

The newly independent spitter sticks to a finesse many spitters aren’t comfortable with penning. But Miitch continues to colour her way through a spectrum of shades that is sitting well with both her fans and newcomers alike.

Through a circuit of sonically varying notes, the production hits all the spots and brings back a flow that few are delivering right now.

But the polished and slick comfort in which she enjoys herself can be likened to a triumvirate of rappers both past and present. However, calling this a mixtape does not do Sailor Goon justice; her topical interests are sheared with a brilliant cut of accessibly virtuosic executions.

The Verdict

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Sailor Goon pops the trunk to showcase native skill Maliibu Miitch snaps into with ease. The ten-track extravaganza whips up a compendium of motifs, each different from the last, yet provides space for facets of taste without contrasting the mosaic she presents.

The passion and pride Robert’s injects into the project is evident, and she remarks that her fresh drop is important to her: “Sailor Goon means everything to me. I’ve been through a lot in this industry, and there were times when I didn’t know when this moment would come.”

Overall, Miitch has dropped a bomb; SG is an easy listen and has listeners going back to tracks, with no skips and repeat listens. Without forcing a style, it’s autochthonous, with a shaker of tastemaking inspiration sewn throughout.
