Opinion: Russia will be licking its lips at the prospect of another EU referendum, and Britain is not ready
Andy Burnham gave his strongest indication that Russia influenced Brexit. Upon entering Downing Street, the Prime Minister asked about the EU Referendum: “I asked the question coming to Downing Street, was there interference in the 2016 referendum from Russia? And I’ve had the clear answer that yes, there was.”
While the Prime Minister has not officially announced any plans to hold another referendum, the tenor of his speeches makes a future vote possible. However, given a rich history of poisonings, sabotage and other attacks on UK soil, Vladimir Putin will feel confident in the event of another ballot, and London’s support for Ukraine remains an accelerant.
Russia & South Asian Bot Farms: A Threat to Rejoining
It’s no secret Russia is behind some of the most sophisticated troll and bot networks on the internet and that many are now being outsourced.
But there’s another player in the game too. In Pakistan and Sri Lanka, vast networks of operatives responsible for spreading political misinformation for profit are starting to divide UK society.
These ventures, which can earn thousands of pounds through AI-generated videos and images, could include rhetoric surrounding the European Union if another Brexit referendum is held.
Is It Possible?
The question now is, with Reform UK still on the heels of the Labour Party at a time of division, could a referendum see Britain rejoin the EU? It’s doubtful, given online influence is a game Russia is an expert at.
The Kremlin has been able to deploy operatives in person and through cyberattacks, and continues to map undersea cables around the United Kingdom. This already points to an active and coordinated attempt to knock the UK off balance.
If a vote were to be held again, there’s a high probability Putin is planning an operation to divide and dissuade the public even more than it is now. While Russia is weak on the battlefield, the Kremlin’s intelligence agencies remain ever hawkish, ready to land a decisive blow.
