As the film releases in cinemas, fans question how accessible the movie really is
After a long rollout featuring controversy and discourse, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey releases exclusively in theatres today. Some are questioning availability of it in its purest form. The difference between 70mm IMAX and regular screen showings is vast, with important atmospheric shots significantly cropped which has angered some fans of the director.
Costing more than £250 million, the film stars Matt Damon as the King of Ithaca, Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope and Tom Holland as their son, Telemachus. With an all star line up, the actors are joined by Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page, Charlie Theron, Jon Bernthal, and Mia Goth in supporting roles
Debate and Discourse
Another debate surrounds the accessibility of the film’s true aspect ratio, with some arguing that the visuals appear significantly cropped to satisfy regular 35mm screens.
Filmed entirely in IMAX 70mm, Nolan said of the experience: “The sharpness and the clarity and the depth of the image is unparalleled.”
Some pushed back against its use, saying it prices out the average movie fan. However, The Dark Knight director told reporters: “You rarely get the chance to really talk to moviegoers directly about why you love a particular format and why, if they can find an IMAX screen to see the film on, that’s great. It really is just a great way of giving people an experience that they can’t possibly get in the home.”
