The Batman Part II: A Temporary Fix Follows Big Delay

James Gunn defends The Batman Part II delays, which will now arrive in 2028. Fans are growing weary, but will the hype die down?

The Batman Part II has experienced delay after delay and the latest news isnโ€™t good. Now, Matt Reeves has announced that the project will be postponed once again, this time until February 2028. The first instalment was released in 2022, meaning fans will have waited nearly seven years between films by the time the sequel arrives. Fans are understandably disenchanted with the whole experience, and DCU head James Gunn had something to say about it.

DC released a “Teaser” taken from screen test footage to tide fans of the franchise over.

Knowing a delay was on the cards, the director released screen test footage, packaged as a teaser trailer. However, it does little to paste over the cracks of what feels like a messy production. Is he under pressure? Likely. But given the impact of Batman’s last outing, it’s understandable that the studio needs another win following Robert Pattinson‘s debut as the vigilante superhero.

James Gunn Pushes Back

CEO of DC Studios James Gunn pushed back, saying the studio remains committed to the project and that this kind of wait is entirely normal. In a statement on social media, he said:

โ€œTo be fair, a 5-year gap or more is fairly common in sequels. 7 years between Alien and Aliens. 14 years between Incredibles. 7 years between the first two Terminators. 13 years between Avatars. 36 years between Top Guns. And, of course, 6 years between Guardians Vol 2 and Vol 3.โ€

His position was rejected by several fans, who argued that those films were not planned sequels. In 2024, Gunn said the reason for the delay was that there โ€œisnโ€™t a full scriptโ€ and that Reeves is โ€œcommitted to making the best film he possibly can.โ€

Perfectionism Or Logistical Delays?

These delays only heap pressure and raise expectations for the final product. Though the first instalment was generally well received, there were critics who felt the production needed a little more.

With more time to develop the project further, it could go one of two ways: it either delivers far beyond its predecessor, or it risks becoming overproduced. As a Batman director, Matt Reeves is finding his rhythm within the Gotham universe, though there are still a few hurdles to overcome. I only hope that’s the case here.

Unfinished Script

The fact that the script was unfinished could mean a few things: like Part I, it may not be based on any one comic, or several stories could be being fused together, much like Nolan did with his universe. However, Nolan’s sequels were planned, directed in his style, and showcased another side of the Caped Crusader that DC ultimately green-lit.

Though The Dark Knight was not as faithful to the source material as many had hoped, it delivered the essential components of a Batman story while taking a few creative liberties. Translating literature to the big screen will always require adjustments to make it work; otherwise, it can suffer from poor execution. Matt Reeves is capable; let’s hope he’s not overthinking things.

Overall, I am hopeful, though the fact we’re getting a host of television shows could dilute the mythos a bit. If executed correctly, rumours that the Clayface movie may feed into The Batman Part II could provide a welcome prologue. Let’s wait and see, but another delay will not be acceptable in the sense that much of the hype will have receded.
