The far-right activist and frontman of ‘Patriot Platform’ continues to antagonise rescue workers with a belligerent motive
Danny ‘Tommo’ Thomas has continued to disrupt rescue operations, and most recently was filmed slashing an inflatable dinghy with a knife while a French worker was aboard. The action was recorded while a rescue worker was still inside the boat as he attempted to leave.
Social media users have called for action, with some claiming the act carries a penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment and a €150,000 fine under French law. However, any offence would first need to be proven before such a penalty could apply.
RNLI Intimidation
In the past few days, the self-proclaimed patriot’s actions have increased threats to maritime workers’ lives amid ongoing protests against migrant arrivals.
Volunteers at the non-profit rescue service were intimidated by members of Tommo’s group, Patriot Platform, and called “traitors” after bringing a migrant dinghy to safety.
This led to the RNLI’s Portsmouth base being closed, reducing local rescue capacity and creating additional risk for tourists and local people using the sea for recreation.
The confrontational figure used threatening language, directly addressing the RNLI: “You know who I am? My name’s Danny Tommo. You saw what we did in Dover, and if you don’t stop right now, I’m calling 1,000 men to come to this place.”
RNLI chief executive Peter Sparkes branded Tommo’s intimidation tactics and behaviour “completely unacceptable”.
Two days ago, it emerged that Danny Tommo’s own boat had sunk due to a mechanical failure near the mouth of the River Arun.
The far-right figure claimed it was sabotaged by left-wing activists and he was subsequently billed £1,775 by Littlehampton Harbour, with the invoice allegedly including £738 for the use of a recovery vessel.
