The referee for England vs Argentina‘s World Cup 2026 semi-final has been announced as Ismail Elfath, an American-Moroccan official who has quickly risen on the international stage. Background

Born in Casablanca, Morocco, Ismail Elfath moved to the United States in 2001 as a teenager and later became a US citizen. As well as being a football player, he studied mechanical engineering at the University of Texas before becoming interested in professional refereeing.

After becoming a FIFA-listed referee in 2016, he became one of the most prominent officials in North America, having overseen more than 220 MLS (Major League Soccer) matches since his debut in 2012. Ismail’s World Cup debut came at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where he oversaw three games, including Portugal vs Ghana, Cameroon vs Brazil, and Japan vs Croatia (Round of 16). He was later picked as the fourth official for the Argentina vs France final.
