You’ll be hearing a lot more from JayaHadADream, so you might as well get educated. Her new single Main Characters drops today, saddled with a fresh looping sample which has been described as a laid back grime-driven composition. The track was lit in the kitchen of two-time BAFTA Award-winning producer Crafty893.
Featuring on this fresh joint is Big Zuu, who introduces an accelerant of flow, seasoning the song with a zestful spirit. Having gained applause from artists of acclaim like Ghetts, Jaya is increasingly on call for a hall of fame induction.
What Main Characters Sounds Like
Described as a mellow grime beat, I’d argue it’s more a boom-bap style-hip-hop instrumental. Although it features an upbeat tonality, those dusty drums and veil-covered samples cannot be mistaken.
Animated with jolting melodies to taste, it spreads a texturally sombre platform for the two rappers to attack the beat, making it accessible from a variety of angles.
Stirred in a broth of modest sound, Jaya dispatches an impressive bout of expressive wordplay. Her cadence and vocal consistency glide through the track like butter, augmenting the demure of a message she expounds.
Speaking on the new drop, the rapper said: “Lyrically, it’s me flexing confidence, calling out false love, dodgy auras, and industry facades. I talk about survival, womanhood, legacy, and staying sharp — even when the weight’s heavy. Zuu really brought the themes to life, with bars full of grit and heart, speaking about struggle, loyalty and resilience.”
Main Characters is a listing with heart—one that will go far. Having only recently come across Jaya, this is yet another feather in her hat of tempos she’s conquered, this time supplied by Crafty. Her flow and voice offer a distinctive class, one that’s recognisable.
The Verdict
It’s simultaneously pacy, poignant, and vibrant, with idiosyncrasy splashed across its performance. With a delicacy embossed by the two rappers, it’s a pensive, brooding, and ruminative single built to attract attention.
There’s a syntax of eloquent persuasion, enhanced by content strengthened by its use of similes. This quill-soaked notepad of a track is one I’ll be keeping on loop, and I can’t wait to hear it again.
