Capcom’s legendary video game gets another film adaptation. This is what you need to know
The new Street Fighter film seems to be a great adaptation thanks to its tongue-in-cheek approach, appropriate casting, and phenomenally over-the-top acrobatics. The cast goes above and beyond with the except for 50 Cent as Balrog. Still, it’s forgivable, given the limited options for the role — and finding someone willing to play to him.
Will it top the 1994 Street Fighter II manga? Probably not, as the screenplay takes its own path, and the cheesy fun one at that. That said, we’ve only seen a trailer so far, and the movie might knock it out of the park.
Casting: Praise for Accuracy
The casting choices for Street Fighter are celebrated for their accuracy and dedication to its source material. With particular praise for Jason Momoa as Blanka and Olivier Richters as Zangief, Orville Peck as Vega and the studio’s selections for Ryu and Ken — we’re in for a real treat. Avoiding traditional casting allows the production to lean heavily into the outlandish choices Capcom made during development of the title. This was deliberate, and we have to thank the project’s director, Sakurai, for his input here as a lifelong fan.

Street Fighter 2026: The Plot
The film is set in 1993, at the height of Street Fighter’s popularity, around the events of the ‘World Warrior fighting tournament’, attracting fighters from all over the world, each with their own motives. However, the occasion becomes tainted by M. Bison and his conspiracy-laden organisation, Shadaloo. Expect a 1990s-era tone, with retro callbacks and references.
Release Date
The film is scheduled to be released in cinemas on October 16th, 2026, with RealD 3D and IMAX showings hosted by major theatres.
