Westside Gunn sparked a huge debate regarding Dr.Dre’s 2015 release Compton, comparing it to his own music and that “he waited fifteen years” for “trash”.

Westside Gunn disses Dr. Dre’s Compton album.

Westside Gunn Compton Comments

On social media, Gunn took to dissing the album by saying:

“N****s waited 15 years for Compton to drop and it’s trash and it took me 15 hours to make Hitler Wears Hermes 2 and it’s a masterpiece.”

Later, he added:

“10 years later and still not impressed by none of these n****s. Still making albums in a day and 12 still AOTY contender, Heels Have Eyes EP of the year. All with no machine, no fake beefs, no gimmicks, no clickbait, just art… this been hella of a ride and I did everything my way… God is the greatest.”

Debate

This ignited debate in the culture regarding its place in hip-hop history. And while it did introduce us to Anderson. Paak, I think he’s got a point. Though, Westside Gunn is no prize either.

Dr. Dre has not responded, though it did bring DJ Quick into the fray, asking for more respect in a landscape where he is severely underrated.

So, is Compton trash? It’s not exactly a masterpiece, but it’s way below average. We expected more, and no one is returning to listen to it.
